Students at Cal Poly Spread Awareness of Endothelial Dysfunction

Three students at California Polytechnic State University performed work on two projects during Summer 2024 as part of the Cal Poly Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). The three students (and their majors) were:

  • Sofi David (Public Health)
  • Kalia Richard (Biomedical Engineering)
  • Lily Wilcox (Biomedical Engineering)

The two projects were:

  • Endothelial Dysfunction Presentation and Survey

The team developed a series of presentations tailored for different audiences to explain the importance of endothelial dysfunction measurement with pre/post surveys to gauge impact of the presentation. Additionally, the group composed the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Protocol and Written Informed Consent Form receiving approval from the IRB Board for the project.

  • 3 minute versus 5 minute hyperemia project

The team has drafted an IRB protocol where Cordex units will be used to determine that the EnDys Score can be used to measure endothelial dysfunction when a 3-minute hyperemia hold is performed instead of the current 5-minute hold per the guidelines developed by Dr. Mary Corretti. Making this change would improve the physician’s workflow with the Cordex device.
